Am in the process of rebuilding my 914 Type IV race engine
When breaking in a street engine.......I would drive it at various rpm limits for around a 1000 miles........change oil and filter......good to go
Rather hard with a race engine

How do you guys break in a new race engine?..............don't have an engine dyno at my disposal

It's been a while, but I've pretty much run it as normal, no real special steps - dino oil of course, not synthetic, naturally... and change oil and filter after the first day or weekend or whatever. I broke mine in on Valvoline VR1, but have heard great things about the Brad Penn break-in oil - which you can get from Dan Beckett, for one option...

Ironically, still getting around to getting my Turbo running well enough to break IT in... but street motor there, all stock...

Any non-synthetic with zinc will work. Rotella 15w-40 is cheap, has zinc. Remove plugs, prime, reinstall. Start, set timing, check for leaks, then proceed to cam/bearing break-in. About 20 mins at 2.5krpm should suffice. Change oil/filter, then go onto cylinder loading to seat rings. You'll want to find a decent hill to do high load/vacuum. Weight car down and get to operating temps to do hill climb in/around peak torque band, coast down hill throttle closed. Do that repeatedly for 30 mins or more (preference, piece of mind, etc). Do another oil/filter change. Good to go.
